When 37-year-old Ben fell ill with flu-like symptoms, he thought it couldn’t be serious. But it was.
He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the PA Hospital with an infection that had weakened his heart, and caused a stroke. “I was told to call any family members who wanted to see him,” says his wife, Christie. “I didn’t even cry because I couldn’t take it in.”
Ben spent 33 days in ICU, and 103 days in hospital.
Patients who are immobile start to lose muscle mass within 24 hours. That’s why we’ve introduced in-bed cycle ergometers that are attached to the bed. Even patients like Ben, who are ventilated, can use them to gain the benefits of exercise.
We need your urgent help which could help us invest in innovative equipment that can help critically ill patients like Ben make the best possible recovery.
